Types of classes

Courses
Courses are most popular, and are probably one of the best ways to learn. They can last for 5 weeks, 10 weeks, or longer. After completing a course, you may choose to move to the next level and continue building upon the material you have learned.

In a course, each lesson builds upon the steps and techniques you learn in previous lessons. Courses should teach all that is needed: dance steps, technique, music, and so forth.

The drawback is that it requires a commitment of time. With people’s busy schedules it may be hard to commit to a specific time once or twice a week for 5 weeks or a longer period of time. Some courses allow drop-ins either throughout the class or for the first few classes. This way you can drop-in to a class, and if you enjoy it, you can register or continue shopping around. Make sure you check the course details for any restrictions or requirements.

For partner dances, since you meet the same group of dancers each week, you’ll have a core group of fellow students at your level that you will be able to dance and practice with, creating a mini dance community of people with the same passion for dance as yourself.

Drop-In Classes
Many instructors offer drop-in/open classes, which means anyone can join in at any lesson. Since anyone can drop-in, the class level can vary a lot, and the instructor may not be able to accommodate everyone's level of skill. An advantage to drop-in classes is that you do not have to make a commitment of time or money. It is also a great way to evaluate different instructors, to see who you like best, without having to sign up for multiple lessons in advance. Drop-in classes can be a good complement to your progressive courses.

For social/nightclub dances, if the drop-in lesson is in a club setting, the environment can be noisy and disruptive. However, a big bonus is that you will be able to practice what you have learned right away since you are already at a nightclub.

Courses that allow to Drop-In
Some progressive courses still allow dancers to drop in. Read the requirements outlined by the school/teacher regarding when can a student just drop in.

Events
Events include workshops, practices, dances, socials or any other one time event. Some events, such as workshops or socials with classes offer lessons while others, such as a party, do not. Most classes posted with events allow anyone to join. Try to choose one that is appropriate for your level to avoid frustration. Be sure to check the event details for a schedule and other important information.
