 1.4) What will I learn?

(top)

Your training will vary depending on the dance you are trying to learn. Ask instructors for more information on what each dance involves so that you have an idea of what you can expect from your classes.

Generally speaking, depending on the class you take, you should learn the following:

Timing and Musicality: You will learn the basic rhythm and count of the dance. Certain dances focus more on steps to a beat and others focus more on movement to the music. Your instructor will explain this difference to you and help you understand how to do both.
Basics: You will learn the fundamentals of a particular dance style as well as the proper rhythm of your steps to the beat and to the music.
Leading and Following (Partner dances): For the leader, you will learn the art of guiding your partner and clearly indicating your intention. For the follower, you will learn how to respond instantaneously to your partner’s lead and correctly follow his intention. Good partnering skills will help you enjoy the dance a lot more.
Moves/Patterns/Choreogrpahies: After mastering your basics, you will learn a short choreography or combination of moves that expand on your basics. You may learn a new move/pattern in each class or add on to a previous move/pattern.
Styling: Once you feel comfortable with your basics, you will learn how to incorporate style, flare and individuality into your moves. You will begin to make the dance your own and might start creating your own moves.

Remember that every dance has something to offer and you can’t go wrong trying something new.
