| | | The dance style that would be best for you depends greatly on your personal preference and your goals. There are many different styles of dance, each with its own music, artistic feel, movement, and culture.
You can start by taking a look at the music you enjoy listening to. Is it classical, romantic, latin, jazzy, or current? Would you like to find physical and artistic ways to express yourself to that music?
Is there a certain style of dance that you find interesting or beautiful? Do you like formal dances or street dances? Are you interested by aerobic dances or dances that are not too complicated? Do you prefer something that is showy or subtle?
Are you just looking for a dance that you can learn so that you can attend events/parties and socialize? Do you want something that you can do by yourself or that you would like to do with a partner? Is there a particular event, like a wedding, that you are preparing for?
Would you like to learn a dance that you can perform in front of an audience? Or would you like to learn a dance that challenges you through competition?
Consider the following goals and some of the dances recommended for each goal. See if any of these match your preference.
Goals:
 | Social Dancing:
Salsa, Swing, Hip Hop.
|
 | Solo ExpressionBallet, Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop, Belly Dancing, Flamenco, etc.
|
 | Performance
Almost all dances provide an avenue for performing. Be sure to ask the school. You will need to be very dedicated.
|
 | Competition
Ballroom dancing is very structured and offers many opportunities to compete. Some other dances like Hip Hop, Salsa, Swing, etc also offer competitions although they may not be as structured.
|
 | Events (ie/ Weddings, etc):
Traditional dances such as Waltz and other romantic dances like Foxtrot and Tango. If you want something more fun, try Salsa. |
The type of dance you decide to learn depends on your goals and whether or not you want a lot of structure, a social environment where you can dance and practice regularly, or you want to take it to a professional level for performances with a dance company.
Watch dance performances and competitions, go to dance night clubs, and take some drop-in classes, so that you can figure out what is best for you.
